This summer on a Friday night, a group of York Bloggers and their plus ones were invited along to review a cocktail masterclass at Jalou York, which is situated inside an old church. I’m sorry this post is so delayed. I’ve had a lot of health problems since I attended this event, so sadly I’m only just getting round to posting this review. I was a frequent visitor of the previous bar which lived in the premises Jalou now lives in. I invited my wonderful mum along with me as my plus one, as I knew she would love making some cocktails with me.
Our evening was hosted by two fabulous ladies, who explained about Jalou and their cocktail making process. Their cocktail making skills were absolutely brilliant. We were all seated upstairs in the VIP lounge area, with our own private bar – it was brilliant having our own little exclusive area. The interior inside Jalou is beautiful and sleek, with stunning light fixtures, beautiful purple décor and a variety of well-situated seating areas.
Upon arrival, we were each handed a glass of prosecco to enjoy. We then had to choose two cocktails each from the menu which we wanted to create ourselves and then split off into smaller groups. My first choice was simple and really easy to make, but I liked it because of the special additional feature – a sparkler! Can you tell I like fruity and sweet cocktails?!
In-between each cocktail making session, the lovely ladies kept handing us shots, which was fun! Whilst others were busy making their cocktails, I took this as an opportunity to have a nosey around Jalou and snap some photos of the beautiful venue. The team at Jalou were great and mingled with the other bloggers who weren’t currently making their cocktails. Corinne, a lovely blogger who had recently moved from Leeds to York, chose to make mojitos – as did my mum! Love the photo (below) which I took of my mum and Corinne deep in concentration ready for mojito making.
One of my ultimate favourite cocktails is the Porn Star Martini. It just tastes so good. I, of course, chose to make myself one of these. Unfortunately, my version wasn’t quite as perfect as the one which the bar staff demonstrated to me haha. I will be honest though, I was also really nervous about using the blow torch! It was cool to use/see to be honest.
It was during this evening that I met a super lovely York based blogger, Natalie. For one of her cocktails, Natalie made herself the Cookie Monster cocktail, which she was really excited about. The music throughout the evening was brilliant – Natalie, her boyfriend and I even all did a little dance on Instagram stories towards the end of the event, which was hilarious. How cute does her Cookie Monster cocktail look though?!
Overall, we had such a good night. What an amazing experience! Thank you so much to the team at Jalou York for inviting us along and letting us review the cocktail masterclass. It was such a fun evening. You can find out more information about Jalou and their bars across the two cities, Jalou York and Jalou Newcastle. Jalou offers cocktail making masterclasses starting from £20.95 per person, which I think is a bargain for everything you get, even in the cheapest packages. Perfect for birthday and hen parties!
