Ever wondered how to start your own blog and what things you need to consider? I’d dabbled in blogging during my teens and early 20’s but things were very different in the world of blogging back then. There are plenty of reasons to start a blog. It does take a lot of hard work and nothing happens quickly in terms of popularity. Blogging is great because it is an awesome way to express yourself and all of your hard work is on display in one place on the internet. My blog is something I feel proud of.
Choosing a blogging platform
This can be a very tough decision, there are plenty of options and there are so many pros and cons to each. I’ve personally only ever used wordpress.com (which is free), or wordpress.org once I went self hosted after a year or so. Other alternatives to WordPress include Blogger, Tumblr or many other platforms. Perhaps you could have a look at a few different options and see which one works best for you.
Decide what topics you want your blog to focus on
Spend some time thinking about your interests and what you will genuinely enjoy writing about. Like I’ve mentioned many times, I began with a fashion blog and then expanded into other topics as my blog grew and my interests started to change.
Deciding on a blog name
Again, another tough decision but it is something which may need quite a bit of thought. You need to consider a variety of things, so think about what topics you’d like to cover. Will you be an anonymous blogger, use a fake/’stage’ name or use your own name? I knew I’d be generally blogging about my life which is why I was happy to use LouiseRoseRailton.com as my blog name and URL.
The theme or layout you decide on should reflect your blogs and your own personality. Try consider how user friendly the design is, as if people find it hard to navigate they may not stick around on your blog.
Social media accounts
Use social media to your blogs advantage! Networking online via platforms like Twitter can be really useful to get to know others and help potential readers to find you. Some people run their blogging via Instagram, as it requires less work than maintaining a blog and everything can be found in one place.
Photography and images
Imagery is a very important aspect of a blog. You can’t just use any image you find on the internet due to copyright, so I personally prefer to use my own photographs. As an ex-photography student, I already owned a DSLR camera but it’s over 7 years old now and has been used a lot. For a while, I was mainly depending on my iPhone to get me by. In 2016 I got the Olympus Pen 6 and haven’t looked back. It does everything I need it to do in regards to blogging.
These tips are just the very basics of how you can start your own blog. Hopefully this will at least get you started! Do you have any tips for someone considering starting their own blog? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
