Creating a successful blog in 2018 is something many people feel apprehensive to do. There are so many blogs, and many of them can be largely ignored. But what does it mean to you to be successful with your blog? Some people want to make mountains of passive income with theirs, while others just want to get a few readers and have their content enjoyed.
Whatever you want to do with your blog, there are a few things you need to make sure you get down right from the beginning. This comprehensive guide will tell you what you need to know:
Decide What Your Blogging Niche Will Be
As a blogger, you can write about anything and everything you want. That being said, it’s usually better to have a niche, and become known for something more specific. Are you into fitness? DIY? Think about what you’re most passionate about and then focus on that. Once you’ve decided on your niche, it’ll be helpful for you to select keywords you’ll focus on so that you can create awesome content that gets views.
Choose Your Ideal Blogging Platform
Choosing your blogging platform can vary depending on your personal preference and knowledge of them. Many bloggers start out with a free platform, but if you have dreams of being a big name blogger, having a paid platform with your own domain name is important. These are far more valuable and you’ll be more likely to make money this way.
On the subject of choosing your domain name, you need to think about this carefully. It should be easy to remember, unique, easy to pronounce, and it could even represent the topic you choose to cover a little bit. Some people simply choose to name their blog after themselves, but it’s up to you how creative you want to get with this. Before setting your heart on a domain name, make sure you check that it’s free.
Select Appropriate Website Hosting
Now you’ll need website hosting, which will cost you next to nothing each month. Some will even offer deals, such as a free domain name for a year. Look for customer support, as this is something that will be invaluable to you should anything go wrong.
Get On YouTube And Teach Yourself
Some people choose to hire a designer to create a brand new theme for their account/blog, but of course, this can cost a lot of money. You can learn pretty much anything you like on YouTube, so use the resources available to create your own simple theme at first, at least until you’ve got into the vlogging habit and you know this is something you’re going to stick to. You can always jazz up your site a little later on down the line. Bear in mind that it should still be super easy to read and navigate!
Work On Creating Different Types Of Content
Different types of content are imperative for creating a successful blog. Writing blogs is important sure, but what about creating videos, taking attractive pictures, and even creating useful graphics? These things can be shared on social media profiles then, too. This can give your blog a huge boost in traffic. In 2018 especially, it’s important to create different types of high quality content. High quality is the key word here – you can’t just film a YouTube video using your smartphone and think that that’s enough. You’ll need a decent camera, and editing skills too. It doesn’t have to be 100% perfect at first, but you need to do your best to create content that people are going to want to watch and then watch again and recommend to their friends!
Think of your audience when it comes to everything they do. Speak their language in your posts, and tailor everything to them you can think of.
Working With Other Bloggers
One of the biggest and most important ways to get into the blogging scene, is to begin working with other bloggers. You could collaborate and make videos together, you could write guest posts for one another’s blogs; whatever you decide to do, you both have the benefit of sharing one another’s audience and building up awareness of your own platforms. Adam White from Guest Post Tracker explains that you should develop a relationship with other bloggers before pitching them a guest post idea. Don’t just cold email bloggers right off the bat and ask them. Make sure you’re following their social pages, engaging with them on their posts, and leaving valuable comments on their blogs. Get involved in blogger chats on Twitter and other social platforms. Becoming a part of the blogging community is essential!
Finding Ways To Monetize
I recently wrote this guide about how to go freelance with your blog. You won’t be able to monetize your blog right away. You need traffic first. Once your blog is up and running, it’s up to you how you begin to monetize it. You can use ads and affiliate links like many bloggers do to make a small percentage of a sale. You could create paid content, first by building up a subscriber list and offering free exclusive content, then notifying them about an e-book you’ve written or an online course you’ve created. Bloggers who really hit the blogging scene hard can even get invited to exclusive events, taken away on incredible trips, given clothes to review, and sent other cool items to try. There’s no saying that this won’t be you eventually, but you’ll need to establish your blog and build a name for yourself first. It took me over a year or so to establish my blog and myself as a blogger.
This is why it’s so important to become your own person in the blogging industry with your own niche. They’re not going to want to work with you if you’re just the same as everybody else! Take a look at various bloggers in the industry you want to get into and see what they’re doing. Take inspiration from them, but never copy.
Don’t wait to start you blog. The sooner you get started, the quicker you could establish yourself as a blogger with a successful blog!
