Florida is one of the top tourist destinations in the world for a reason – it’s full of fun things to do. Here are five reasons to visit Florida and how to get the best out of your stay.
Visit the theme parks
Florida is a haven for theme park lovers. Walt Disney World is the most famous, which itself is a complex of theme parks including the likes of Epcot and Magic Kingdom. You then have the likes of Universal Studios (which is full of movie-themed ride experiences), Busch Gardens (the top park for big rides and rollercoasters) and Wet n’ Wild (the state’s biggest water park). You can stay at hotels at these theme parks, however you may find it cheaper to rent a separate hotel and drive to these parks/get a shuttle bus. Going during peak times could involve longer queues, however you can pay extra for fast-track tickets so that you get on more rides.
Relax on the beaches
If you don’t fancy being active, the beaches in Florida also make it the perfect destination for a relaxing holiday. There are popular strips such as Miami’s South Beach, in which you could choose between various themed sections whilst also touring the neighbouring Art Deco flavoured streets and monuments. There’s also the likes of popular surf spot Miramar beach where you can stay in luxury hotels such as Residence Inn Sandestin at Grand Boulevard. There’s also the canine friendly Jupiter Dog Beach.
Spot the wildlife
There’s also plenty of unique wildlife to see in Florida. It’s a popular spot for alligators and there are lots of boat tours for spotting these animals. Meanwhile, companies like River Ventures offer Crystal River tours where you can swim with manatees. Florida’s beaches are also great places to spot nesting and hatching turtles – one of the most popular spots being Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park.
Enjoy the food
There are thousands of amazing restaurants in Florida to choose from. It’s a big place to try seafood, with specialities including conch fritters, oysters and fried gator tail. Florida also love their barbecued food and there are lots of great places to try outdoor grilled ribs and steak. Influences from Cuba and the rest of the Caribbean can also be found throughout the state including curried goat and Cubanos. Don’t forget to also tuck into some Key Lime Pie for dessert (Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe is a popular place to try this delicious food).
See a Space station
Kennedy Space Centre is NASA’s primary launch centre and is a must-see for anyone visiting Florida. The visitor complex is full of exhibits, whilst tours allow you to see other parts of the space station. The attraction is great for adults and kids – whether you’re in love with the cosmos or know very little about space exploration, you’re certain to get something out of this trip. If you’re lucky, there may even be a launch whilst you’re out there.
